An integrated simulation model to evaluate national policies for the abatement of agricultural nutrients in the Baltic Sea AgEcon
Hyytiainen, Kari; Ahtiainen, Heini; Heikkila, Jaakko; Helin, Janne; Huhtala, Anni; Iho, Antti; Koikkalainen, Kauko; Miettinen, Antti; Pouta, Eija; Vesterinen, Janne.
This study introduces a prototype model for evaluating policies to abate agricultural nutrients in the Baltic Sea from a Finnish national point of view. The stochastic simulation model integrates nutrient dynamics of nitrogen and phosphorus in the sea basins adjoining the Finnish coast, nutrient loads from land and other sources, benefits from nutrient abatement (in the form of recreation and other ecosystem services) and the costs of agricultural abatement activities. The aim of this study is to present the overall structure of the model and to demonstrate its potential using preliminary parameters. The model is made flexible for further improvements in all of its ecological and economic components. Results of a sensitivity analysis suggest that...

CONSUMER INTENTIONS OF BUYING POULTRY MEAT UNDER PERCEIVED BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL OR TECHNOLOGICAL RISK IN FINLAND AgEcon
Heikkila, Jaakko; Pouta, Eija; Forsman-Hugg, Sari; Makela, Johanna.
The study focuses on various types of food safety risks: biological (zoonoses), chemical (chemical treatment of the meat) and technological (use of genetically modified feed). The emphasis was on how the perceived risks affect the purchase intentions in the case of broiler meat. In the case of each risk products the attitude-level variables had importance in explaining the buying intentions. The heterogeneity of the respondents regarding the purchase intentions of risk products was analysed by latent class logistic regression that included all three risk products. About 60% of the respondents belonged to the group of risk avoiders in which the purchase intention of risk food was significantly lower than in the second group of risk neutrals in which 64% of...

Consumers' choice of broiler meat in Finland: the effects of country of origin and production methods AgEcon
Pouta, Eija; Forsman-Hugg, Sari; Heikkila, Jaakko; Isoniemi, Merja; Makela, Johanna; Paananen, Jaana.
Among consumers there is an increasing interest and concern about the ways food is produced. This calls for the poultry industry to differentiate their products and production methods to directions valued by the consumers. In this study we use choice experiment to analyse the importance of broiler production method and the country of origin for the Finnish consumers. In the experiment, we offer several alternatives for regular broiler, including products that have been produced using organic methods, as well as products produced by emphasising animal welfare or consumer health aspects. The conditional logit model of consumer preferences for broiler meat in Finland revealed the very strong positive perceptions of domestically produced broiler products....

Discerning welfare impacts of public provision of recreation areas AgEcon
Huhtala, Anni; Pouta, Eija.
This study presents a framework for investigating responses to the supply of public recreation opportunities when supply affects both probability of use and frequency of use days. These components are used to estimate the marginal social net benefits of an exogenous increase in the supply of public recreation opportunities. The study investigates distributional patterns of visiting behavior and benefit estimates for alternative supply strategies, i.e., reduced distance or increased acreage. The results indicate that the probability of participation and the number of use days respond differently to alternative supply strategies and that response varies by income group.

Fiscal and trade distorting effects of capital gains tax on land sales - empirical evidence from agricultural land market in Finland AgEcon
Pietola, Kyosti; Myyra, Sami; Pouta, Eija.
Capital gains taxes are likely to distort the market and resource allocations through so called “lock-in” effect, meaning discouraging trade transactions that trigger the tax payments. When it comes to agricultural land, the lock-in effect implies that the land ownership and active farming deviate from each other and, as a result, land tenancy increases. Increasing land tenancy and land tenure insecurity incur a significant social cost, because they deplete productivity of land by discouraging and delaying irreversible land improvements that would be necessary for maintaining land productivity. This study estimates the fiscal effects of reduction in capital gains taxes imposed on land sales and provides grounds for optimizing the tax scheme. The results...

Heterogeneous farmland owners: two approaches for objective based classification AgEcon
Pouta, Eija; Myyra, Sami; Hanninen, Harri.
Landowner classifications based on their objectives have been used to describe the heterogeneous group of landowners. As the accurate information on landowners preferences is essential in policy planning and evaluation of the effects of various policy instruments, there is a need to develop feasible methods for classifying land owners. In this study we apply objective based classification to farmland owners using the data of Finnish farmland owners. We compare two classification methods, traditional cluster analysis and latent class analysis, in terms of their criterion validity. The comparison of criterion validity, consisting from convergent, concurrent, discriminant and predictive components of validity, revealed that latent class analysis was superior...

Meat Consumption Patterns and Intentions for Change Among Finnish Consumers AgEcon
Latvala, Terhi; Niva, M.; Makela, Jarmo; Pouta, Eija; Heikkila, Jaakko; Koistinen, Laura; Forsman-Hugg, Sari; Kotro, Jaana.
During the past few decades, meat has increasingly become a subject of controversies relating to health and safety, environment, and animal welfare. Even though these changes in perceptions of meat are not yet visible in aggregate consumption figures, they can be observed in individual consumption patterns and as intentions to change the consumption. In this study, we examine changes in meat consumption among the Finnish consumers taking into account both stated changes in the past and intended changes in the future. Based on these changes, we identify consumer segments and investigate in which ways these segments differ from each other socio-demographically and with respect to current meat consumption and the stated reasons for the change. The latent...

The proximity of a field plot and land-use choice: implications for land consolidation AgEcon
Grammatikopoulou, Ioanna; Myyra, Sami; Pouta, Eija.
Traditional methods in agricultural economics and agricultural engineering have yielded mixed results when specifying the costs of an unfavourable parcel structure. Concepts related to travel costs and the production function are frequently applied when the costs of farming distant parcels are examined. However, farmers’ perspective regarding preferences for land use is ignored or partly overlapped by predictions made by researchers. Based on applied econometric models fitted to stated preference data, we revealed that the proximity of a field plot is a relevant factor affecting land-use decisions. One-fourth of landowners would change the use of a field plot if the condition of distance was changed. Landowners would continue farming a field plot if its...

Water recreation benefits from reduced eutrophication in Finnish surface waters AgEcon
Vesterinen, Janne; Pouta, Eija.
Eutrophication has been commonly acknowledged as a typical problem of the Baltic Sea, but it is also emerging in Finnish inland waters. As municipal sources of nutrients have been addressed by enhancing waste water treatment, the pressure has focused to agriculture along with the adoption of the EU- Water Framework Directive, which aims to improve surface water quality to “good ecological status” by 2015. The implementation of the directive will likely affect water recreation behavior and benefits. In this study we modeled water recreation participation and water quality econometrically using a hurdle model for three activities: swimming, fishing and boating. In addition, we estimated the consumer surplus for a water recreation day using a travel cost...
